Film reviews. Movie reviews. Cinema. Motion pictures. Whatever you want to call it, it doesn't matter, because the reviews are constructed out of lies.

Film review - The Descent

The Descent depicts the harrowing moral descent of former Newsround presenter and current Country File frontman, John Craven.

Craven is embittered by the BBC's refusal to rename Country File, 'John Craven's Country File'. He leaves acrimoniously and takes a job over at ITV as a meteorologist. A similar fate befalls him there as ITV refuse to bow to his demands to rename his slot 'John Craven's weather'. A third and final humiliation comes as he fails in his bid to retitle a low-ratings Channel 5 show 'John Craven's Late Night Page 3 Strip Poker'.

At this point Craven gives in to the dark side. He shouts at the TV. He leaves orange peel on country rambles. He even goes so far as to take the last digestive without asking his wife.

Finally a form of redemption comes. Sky One feature him in their series about celebrities' moral descents post-fame. He successfully lobbies them to rename the episode, 'The Descent of John Craven' as 'John Craven's The Descent', even though it doesn't make any sense.

In the final scene, we see a man rejuvenated; a man who has come to terms with the demands of his own ego. He removes his jumper which sports the words 'John Craven's sweater', neatly folds it and puts it in a drawer.
