Film Review – Big
Big stars David Boreanaz as a small boy struggling with the concept of scale. While outwardly normal, David can’t get his head around the fact that objects appear smaller when far away.
An early scene outlines this. David is playing with some small toy cars. He glances out of the window and sees a bus at the end of the road. Thinking it to be the same size as his toys, he sets off to get it. Half-way down the road, the bus passes him. David reaches out with thumb and forefinger, but his arm merely bounces of the side of the vehicle. Chastened, David returns to his room. Upon opening the door, he mistakes one of his toy cars for a real one and panics, thinking he’s going to be run over.
There are any number of similar set-pieces and each one is very poignant. This is an excellent film and admirably raises awareness of a little-known condition.
